Many historic theatres that were once popular weekend spots have been torn down throughout the decades. However, vintage buildings bring so much charm to local cities and deserve to be treasured and preserved. Park Theatre in Holland, Michigan has beaten the odds and has been turned into a flourishing non-profit music venue right across the street from Holland’s Centennial Park.
The Park Theatre in Downtown Holland is a historical building that’s been serving the Holland community since 1886. The venue was originally built as a woodworking mill and feed store. In 1920, it became a Colonial Theatre known for its orchestra and organ. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the inside of the building in 1935, but it was later rebuilt and renamed as the Park Theatre in 1936.
For over 60 years, the Park Theatre was thriving as an adored cultural hot spot in Holland. However, in 1984, it sadly had to close its doors due to competition from multiple different theaters popping up in the area. After the closure, the building had a brief time as a teen nightclub, but it mostly remained abandoned. Then in 1998, the Holland Windmill Chorus purchased it, and shortly after the Park Theatre Foundation was created in December of 200, beginning a new chapter for the historical building.
Today, the Park Theatre has been restored and transformed into a multi-use venue that serves as a cultural center for the Downtown Holland community. In collaboration with many organizations in the community, the Park Theatre has hosted a wide range of events such as concerts, comedy shows, theatre productions, nonprofit fundraisers, reunions, and birthday parties. The theater has been a sought-after space for festivals like Tulip Time, Tulipanes, and various art fairs, providing a unique and historic backdrop for showcasing local and regional talent.
In their mission statement, the Park Theatre declares, “The Park Theatre Foundation provides West Michigan communities with entertainment and culture while empowering artists, championing self-expression, and preserving the historic Park Theatre.” The Park Theatre Foundation’s main objectives are to “Maintain and protect the cultural asset known as The Park Theatre located in Holland, Michigan, and offer a diverse range of events that have high artistic and cultural value.” Their strategies for reaching these goals include maintaining the historic building and upgrading the functionality. They keep the theatre busy with concerts, community events, and more to generate revenue. The theatre has seven corporate level operational sponsors, and actively looks at market demand. The theatre’s facility is best suited for live music, and wants to focus on cultivating a strong music scene. To achieve this, they offer regional musicians many opportunities for professional growth within the facility. Park Theatre has greatly extended its impact by broadening its services. One goal they have yet to accomplish is protecting the long-term existence of the historic building, which requires large capital funds.
The Park Theatre is more than just a historic building. The theatre is a space where the community comes together to celebrate, create, and connect. Whether you’re attending a performance or simply exploring the rich history of the theater, you can experience a little bit of the theater’s rich history. Currently they are having their “Winter Legend Series”, a series of tribute performances of well-known bands and music artists. To get tickets for upcoming events, check out their website!
