The Hope College men’s lacrosse team is starting off their season strong with three wins and one loss out of the four games they have played in the start of their spring season.
Hope athletes have swept the MIAA player of the week awards for the second week in a row, with Nick Schanhals (‘19) awarded the defensive honor and Rocco Mularoni (‘20) getting the offensive award this week.
Last week, Max Kuiper (‘20) won the offensive award, while Gareth Ulmer (‘20) claimed the defensive award.
The team played against Benedictine, Illinois on Saturday and a 15-6 victory, with a nearly record-breaking performance by Mularoni. In the home game, Mularoni equaled the record for most goals scored by a Hope athlete in one game at seven goals, with six of the goals scored before halftime to secure a hefty lead (12-3) for Hope.
Kuiper helped out with two goals and two assists on Saturday. Schanhals made 10 saves for Hope during Saturday’s game and equaled his season high at thirteen saves on last Thursday’s win against John Carroll (9-7), securing another victory for the Flying Dutchmen. Mularoni scored six goals against John Carroll.
Looking ahead, Hope will face off with DePauw at home today at 4:00 p.m., and play two other non-conference matches in March before competing in the conference matches starting in April.
On the women’s side of things, the team defeated Aquinas College this past Saturday. Carly Pieri (‘21) scored five goals, leading the team to a 11-8 victory. Paige Wilmer (‘21) contributed three goals to the game as well and goalie Laurel Frederickson (‘21) saved 11 shots on goal.
The young team is off to a good start! Hope is now 3-0 for the season .
