Fun Things Over Fall Break

Fall break, for some of us, is a time to leave campus and visit home, friends, or perhaps take a little road trip. But for others of us, fall break means staying on campus without the hustle and bustle of normal college life. If you find yourself in the latter group you may ask yourself: will it be boring? I am here to report that no, it will not be boring if you take advantage of all of the awesome things still going on on campus. After a quick perusal of the Hope arts, events and athletics calendar, I have found some on campus activities to keep your Hope-bound self occupied:

If you are into sports, there are games both Saturday and Tuesday on campus. On Saturday, Women’s soccer plays Olivet at home at 12:00 pm. There is also a home football game at 1:00 pm versus Trine. If you play your cards right, you will be able to catch parts of both of these games.

On Tuesday, Men’s soccer plays Calvin at home at 7:00 pm. Women’s volleyball plays Kalamazoo at 7:00 pm also, so it may be a tough decision to make.

If sports aren’t your thing, there are arts events going on in the Kruizenga Art Museum and the Knickerbocker Theater. Open 10 am – 4 pm Tuesday through Saturday, the Kruizenga has a couple of exhibits on display that would be great to check out: Capturing Light: The Art of Shin Sawano, a Tradition for the Future of Japan, and Deities and Devotion in Mongolian Buddhist Art. In the Knickerbocker, on Saturday at 7:30 pm, the Fall Film Series is putting on “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am,” which is sure to be an insightful look at this prolific author. On Monday they are starting to show “Photograph” and will be doing so all week at 7:30 pm.

And if, after all that, you want to get off campus for a while, there are still things for you to do. On Saturday, Holland is hosting a Harvest Festival at Windmill Island Gardens from 10 am – 1 pm for the local community. As always, there is a farmers market on Saturday from 8 am – 3 pm. And to top it off, there is a Little and Big Read Book Giveaway at local libraries. Participating libraries include: Allegan District Library, Allendale District Library, Fennville District Library, Gary Byker Library of Jamestown, Herrick District Library (main library and north branch), Howard Miller Public Library, Loutit District Library, Patmos Library, Saugatuck-Douglas District Library, & Spring Lake District Library.

So, as a takeaway, there is no need to be bored this fall break if you are on campus. Sit back, relax and choose one or all of these activities to keep you busy.
