The Hope College Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Arts Collective will present its spring con- cert on Wednesday, March 15. The concert, entitled “Hope on the Road,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts. The public is invited, and admission is free.

The concert will allow the Holland community to listen to some of the selections the Hope College Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Arts Collective will be per- forming on their 2017 Spring Break Tour.

The pieces will feature mixtures of classical, jazz and global music, as well as traditional works from each respective genre.

Some of the featured works include “Hungarian Dance No. 1” by Johannes Brahms, “Symphony No.7 – Allegretto” by Ludwig van Beethoven, “Mandra – A Fanfare alla Turka” by Egemen Kesikli, “What About Me?” by Michael League, “Skylife” by David Balakrishnan and “Norwegian Dance No. 2” by Edvard Grieg.

The Hope College Chamber Orchestra is directed by Christopher Fashun. He serves as the director of orchestras, the music director of the Brazilian Music Ensemble and an instructor of instrumental music education.

The Chamber Orchestra is the touring orchestra at Hope and is selected each year from members of Hope’s orchestra. This orchestra ensemble has made numerous radio and television appearances. Its performances for Hope’s Christmas Vespers are featured semiannually on PBS affiliates in Michigan and across the country.

The group also presents a variety of concerts throughout the year, ranging from family and youth concerts to more formal performances.

The Jazz Arts Collective is directed by Brian Coyle, who is director of jazz studies and professor of music at Hope. It is the premier large jazz ensemble at Hope, and it places a creative focus on ensemble communication and improvisation.

The collective is comprised of a rhythm section and flexible wind/string instrumentation and performs various compositions and arrangements. Its repertoire ranges from the great historical jazz composers such as Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus, to works by modern jazz masters like Vince Mendoza, Jim McNeely and John Hollenbeck.

The Jazz Arts Collective frequently performs commissions, works by emerging young com- posers and originals by Hope faculty and students. The ensemble also collectively reinterprets and re-imagines the music from the twentieth century classical repertoire.

On their spring break tour, the Chamber Orchestra and the Jazz Arts Collective will be traveling to Chicago, Illinois; Lincoln, Nebraska; Iowa City, Iowa and Denver, Colorado.

Hope’s Chapel Choir will also be travelling to Missouri, Indiana and Illinois over spring break.

The Jack H. Miller Center is located at 221 Columbia Ave., between 9th and 10th streets.
